The Montana Election Observation Initiative  Releases Statement on Missoula County’s Primary Election and Announces Mansfield Center Partnership
HELENA — The Montana Election Observation Initiative (MTEOI)[1], today issued a full statement of findings on its pilot program to observe Missoula County’s June 4 primary election process.
MTEOI observers were present at every critical stage of the election process from the testing of election equipment on May 28 through the certification of county election results on June 18. Observers received training on relevant aspects of each stage of the election that they observed, recorded their observations on structured observation forms, and sent them to a central data team in Missoula that checked forms for consistency. The full statement of findings reports detailed observations for each stage of the election process and provides recommendations for Missoula County election officials to implement ahead of the November general election.
“Overall, Missoula County conducted a commendable election process that was well-organized, peaceful, orderly, and demonstrated consistent adherence to state election laws and guidelines throughout all periods when MTEOI observers were present. Missoula County voters can take pride in this election,” said MTEOI Co-Chair Jeff Mangan.
As MTEOI prepares for an expanded nonpartisan observation mission in Montana in November, MTEOI has entered into an official partnership with the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center housed at the University of Montana to mobilize and engage students, faculty, and affiliated community members in the process.
Commenting on the new partnership, MTEOI Co-Chair Geraldine Custer said, “We are excited to welcome the Mansfield Center as our partner. They are a well-respected institution in Montana dedicated to fostering globally minded leaders and actively working to bridge the rural urban divide here at home. Their support will be of great assistance in helping us conduct a robust and thorough nonpartisan observation mission ahead.”
The Montana Election Observation Initiative (MTEOI) is a nonpartisan effort designed to increase trust and transparency in elections. The Carter Center provided funding and technical assistance to MTEOI.
